J.L. Boren Elementary: Past, Present and Future!

A look into our school's history:

James Leslie Boren, our school's beloved namesake, was born January 20, 1920 in Reager Springs, Texas. He moved to Fort Worth as a child and attended school there. After graduating from Paschal High School in Fort Worth, he attended TCU and later received a full scholarship to Texas A&M University. He served his country as a Coast Guard during WWII as a Chief Petty Officer from 1942-1946.  Mr. Boren served his time in the service and returned to Fort Worth in 1946 after being honorably discharged. He married his wife, Nora Brinkley one year prior to moving back to the DFW area. His education led him to the engineering department for Texas Electric Company. In 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Boren came to Mansfield to begin a dedicated service to the community and the school district.

Bud, as his friends fondly called him, was so active in the community that he was appointed to the School Board to complete an unexpired term in 1961. He was elected president in 1964 and served in that capacity until 1971. His attendance was impeccable, missing only one meeting in seven years to see a new grandchild. During his term of service as president, he led the board to the expansion of special education programs, language courses, counseling and guidance programs, adult education and two vocational programs.  His wife notes, "...he loved and served this district and would have supported it." Sadly, Mrs. Boren passed away after a motorcycle accident while visiting his daughter in 1978. J.L. Boren Elementary was dedicated November 4, 1979. Ahead of its time, the new J.L. Boren Elementary School, was the first school in the state to have a totally solar energy system that supplies hot water, both for heating and cooling.
